Setting yourself up for summer-Inspired AF

With Memorial Day freshly behind us and the Summer Solstice just a few weeks away it’s time for us to plan for the summer we deserve. Look, summer basically lasts for roughly five minutes (actually three months), so there is little to no time to waste when thinking about how we want to spend our time in the sun. Everything about this season brings me joy! Picnics in the park, rooftop happy hours, pool time and more. Consequently, unless you happen to be in academia many of us do not have the summer off, but if you plan right that won’t matter. Some of the tips I offer may not apply to everyone, nonetheless, I hope they can serve you in making your summer a little more inspired AF.

  1. No meeting Fridays: A lot of organizations and companies work to clear at least one work day when you’re not in back to back meetings. If your company/firm doesn’t have this, do what I did when I worked for other people–ask them.

  2. Summer Fridays: If you’re unable to clear all meetings from your schedule on Fridays try and block off your calendar beginning at 2pm. Reclaiming your time as Auntie Maxine says, will allow you to jump into your summer weekend sooner.

  3. Be a Flaneur: I don’t know about y’all, but I LOVE my city in the summer. There are always festivals to attend, concerts, outdoor films, or just being a flâneur (the French word for wanderer) and exploring your own city or town through the lens of a wanderer. Tres chic!

  4. Avoid Over Consuming the News: Now, I am not telling you to become a summer ostrich, but I am urging you to go on a news diet. Limit the amount of time you spend doom scrolling. You can also choose to mute certain channels on social media for a day or even a month. I propose you limit your news consumption to an hour broken up throughout the day. This will give you all you need to stay up to date, including listening to my podcast:)

  5. Build Community: I know many of us feel so disconnected from one another laregly do to the alogorithim of hate. Summer is a wonderful time to join a group! Check out your local community garden, get a park pass and join a hiking group, host an outdoor game night.

Summer is upon us dear friends. Make the most of each and every day, filling yourself with sunshine and joy.
